you should read ';infinite jest'; by david foster wallace. part of the plot background is that the us, mexico and canada form one country, and a large chunk of canada becomes a toxic waste dump. as a result, herds of ';giant feral hampsters'; start running around up there. its not really a big part of the book, but the idea of giant feral hampsters is kind of amusing, and somewhat related to giant chipmunks.
It would take something a little bigger than a 22 to get rid of them. Maybe 50 caliber.

the only thing I can think of is the ';Stay puff Marshmello man in Ghost Busters'; sorry----------
Then chipmunks would probably be at the top of the food chain.
Trees would be smashed into tinder, the land would be torn up by huge holes, the price of chipmunk meat would be much lower, and Al Gore would be blaming George Bush...
