How did they make the Chipmunks' voices high-pitched?

Ok, I know they did it by speeding up the original recording, but the songs are played at regular speed. So why don't the voices go back to regular pitch when the speed is reduced again? How did they make the Chipmunks' voices high-pitched?
its not speeding it up

that alters tone tooo much,

and speeding it up then stretching it alters the vocal information.

theres an 'effect' that you can do thats a pitch changer, but it does it with a stretch effect.

so basically its a stretch effect called pitch shifter that changes pitch and preserves tempo which is the speed. How did they make the Chipmunks' voices high-pitched?
You can change the pitch of sound.
Okay heres how it goes,

the FANTASTIC male singer sings the Chipmunks song

TWICE AS SLOW as it really is

Then, when you speed it up by 100%, the pitch heightens by an octave and the speed increases.
Actually now with everything being digital they just chang the tone and pitch of the actors voice.
The grabbed em by the balls and squeezed until they got the sound they wanted. Sort of what Hillary does to Bill.
Helium. Laughing.....
Record the song at a slower speed and a lower key then sing to this and then speed it back up ..
i have no idea but its cute and funny
